The MDA wants to remind the public that optical devices and contact lenses, with and without correction met the definitions set out in the Medical Devices Act 2012 (Act 737) and the Medical Devices Order (Declaration 2017) as medical devices. Only registered optical devices and contact lenses are allowed to be marketed to consumers. Moreover, only Registered Optometry Practitioners, the self-employed or optical businesses can sell optical devices and contact lenses online. MDA constantly monitors optical devices and contact lenses in the local market. MDA further has the authority to order the recall and cessation of distribution of optical devices and contact lenses on the market if there are issues with the device's performance and safety. To ensure proper usage of optical devices and contact lenses, users and the public should refer to the manufacturer's instructions/manual.
