At the end of September 2018, Medical Device Authority (MDA) had introduced two search engines/databases for the public-use. On a first glance, they look similar to the medical device database of Singapore HSA’s Singapore Medical Device Register (SMDR) but the working mechanism and output are different.

(1) The first is a search engine for MDA-Registered Medical Devices in local market. This search engine’s interface is displayed as in the image below:

This is a database of all medical devices registered for use in human being under the Section 15 of Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737). The Registered Medical Device Search (RMDS) database is opened to all. However, the listing of medical devices in the RMDS should not be construed as an explicit endorsement of the products by MDA. Any party who wishes to know whether a particular medical device is registered under Act 737 may search the device by inserting the partial or full device name or registration number in the searching field of the RMDS. This search engine yields device's full proprietary name, registration number, AR name, and validity of registration.

(2) The second is a search engine for MDA-Registered Licensed Establishments in Malaysia. This search engine looks as following:

MY Picture 2.1

This facility is provided to enable any interested parties to search for licensed establishments under Section 15 of Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737). Any party who wishes to know whether an establishment who is dealing with medical device has been licensed under Act 737 may search the establishment by inserting the partial or full establishment name or license number in the searching field of the relevant search engine. This search engine yields registered name of establishment, license number, license validity period and type of license.

With the introduction of these two new search engines, MDA hopes to give more awareness to the public on the safety of the medical devices they are using, as another effective way to fight counterfeit products in the local market. Furthermore, the RMDS can also prove to be useful for anyone to check up on any product’s prior registration with the MDA and availability in the Malaysian market.
