Vietnam's economic boom has been impressive, but there is a shadow looming over this progress – the nation's worsening respiratory health landscape. A concerning rise in respiratory diseases is raising alarms, demanding immediate attention.

The Alarming Rise of Respiratory Diseases in Vietnam

Vietnam is witnessing a significant increase in chronic respiratory illnesses. Data reveals a high prevalence rate of 4.2% for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) among the population over 40 years old. Additionally, 4.1% of Vietnamese citizens struggle with asthma. These numbers paint a worrying picture, highlighting the need for urgent action.

Smoking a Major Culprit, But Not the Only One

While smoking undeniably plays a significant role, contributing to a staggering 75% of COPD cases, it's not the sole culprit. Worryingly, 41% of Vietnamese men still use tobacco products, which is a serious concern.

However, the problem goes beyond smoking. Air pollution and occupational hazards are likely adding to the burden. This complex scenario necessitates a comprehensive approach that tackles multiple contributing factors.

Vietnam's Respiratory Medical Device Landscape

A critical challenge in addressing Vietnam's respiratory crisis lies in its heavy reliance on imported medical respiratory products. According to PATH, a global health organization, Vietnam primarily depends on foreign sources for vital medical equipment.

This reliance is particularly evident in:

•Oxygen Concentrators: Currently, 100% are imported, primarily from China, Turkey, and the US.
•Ventilators: While there's limited local production, most ventilators are also imported.

•Patient Monitors and Pulse Oximeters: Similar to the above, these crucial devices are entirely reliant on imports.

This dearth of domestic production creates a significant gap between the high demand for respiratory equipment and the local supply. This gap needs to be addressed to ensure the availability of life-saving equipment for Vietnamese patients.

The Healthy Lung Program: A Beacon of Hope

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health recognizes the urgency. They have launched the Healthy Lung Program, a vital initiative aimed at improving outpatient care for COPD and asthma. This program plans to establish a staggering 200 new respiratory clinics across Vietnam between 2024 and 2026. This significant expansion will undoubtedly increase the demand for respiratory medical devices.
